What is Social Audio?

What is Social Audio?

Given the rise of texting, WhatsApp and social media over the past 10 years, you’d be forgiven for thinking that the art of real conversation was dead and buried. However, perhaps because of the isolation experienced by millions across the world during the height of the COVID pandemic, the continued rise of social audio demonstrates that traditional ways of connecting with each other remain just as important as ever. Here we go into more detail about social audio to give you the lowdown on what it is and how it works.

What is social audio?

Social audio is a new strand of social media that uses audio rather than text, emojis and videos to facilitate conversation. Unlike podcasts, which is a one-way broadcast medium, social audio is real-time audio that enables listens to participate in the dialog.

Over the past 12 months you may have noticed new features being added to popular social media platforms. For example, Twitter has been testing Twitter Spaces, where people can host conversations set around specific topics and others join to listen and engage. Facebook also launched Live Audio Rooms that work in much the same way.

These new features were launched in response to a new social media app called Clubhouse. Initially, Clubhouse was an invite only platform that at one point was valued at $4 billion as Twitter entered talks to buy the company. For a while it became an exclusive club that saw a host of people use the platform, including the likes of Elon Musk, Oprah Winfrey, Drake and countless others – even Mark Zuckerberg (Facebook co-founder) and Jack Dorsey (Twitter co-founder) hosted their own rooms. By February 2021, the app had over 8.1 million global downloads, a figure which had more than doubled in the space of two weeks.

Unfortunately, that figure plummeted to only 900,000 by mid-April. While its sudden success didn’t quite last, the interest it garnered in such a short space of time demonstrates there is a huge appetite for social audio. Twitter and Facebook quickly added these new features to their platforms and there are also a growing number of social audio companies that can be categorised as social audio. Aside from Clubhouse, Twitter and Facebook, there is also Spotify Greenroom, Discord, Locker Room, Sonar, Fireside and Chalk and quite a few more.

Is social audio here to stay?

Social audio is a refreshing change from the countless apps that are contributing to the screen fatigue many people are experiencing. People are always looking for new and exciting ways to use technology to engage with family, friends and other cultures around the world, and audio offers a beneficial alternative that takes strain off the eyes and scrolling.

The human voice remains one of the most intimate tools we have to relate with others and social audio combines the best elements of social media with our unique ability to interact with each vocally. It allows people to directly share their stories from anywhere in the world, while feeling as if they are in the same room as the people they’re talking to.

The medium presents a wealth of opportunities for brands and creators to grow their audience. Twitter, Facebook and Spotify lead the way at the moment, but the emergence of Clubhouse suggests there is room for others to step forward and evolve social audio into a serious online player.
