In today’s e-commerce driven world, every business needs a website to sustain and grow their customer base. But this also means special attention has to be paid to the online security of the site to ensure both your private business-related data, and your customer’s personal information, is protected at all times.
Cybercriminals are constantly developing new tools to gain access to sensitive data they can steal from online businesses. Below we explain why online security is so important and how we help to protect our customers from falling victim to cybercrime.
Why is online security important?
From fraud and theft, to property damage, it is more important than ever to remain secure online. Having stringent security measures in place keeps your confidential data private from people attempting to steal and use it for fraud. Identity theft is on the rise and poor security makes it easier for thieves to steal bank and credit card details to access your money. Theft of sensitive data can see important information leaked, or even used against you as blackmail by criminals.
What are SSL Security Certificates and why do I need it for my website?
A Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) creates a secure channel of communication between the server and the web browser being used to access it. If your website does not have an SSL certificate, the URL bar will display a ‘Not Secure’ sign. This can be a worrying for visiting customers and quickly deter them from exploring your site any further.
And they wouldn’t be wrong. SSL encrypts sensitive information such as usernames and passwords and credit card details. Without it in place, cybercriminals can access the information and use it for fraudulent crimes.
Trust is everything between a brand and their customers, and without it, you can quickly lose them to competitors who have stronger online security measures in place.
All of the websites we create are encrypted by a system called Let’s Encrypt. It enables us to include 256-bit SSL Security Certificate as standard within the build. This level of encryption is widely regarded as providing one of the highest levels of protection online today.
What is DDoS Security?
A distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack occurs when a malicious attempt is made to overwhelm a server or network with internet traffic. It occupies the full resources of the website’s infrastructure preventing anyone else from accessing it. Which means customers who will then go elsewhere.
Implementing DDoS security prevents this from happening to your servers by isolating targeted areas before it can impact on your website. We use 1.5 Tbps of DDoS protection, which shields your website from up to 1.5 terabytes of traffic per second (that’s 1,500,000,000,000 bytes!), so you are always very (very!) safe from attacks.
Additional security on site: Security Plugins
In addition to the SSL and DDoS protection we ensure is in place for all of the websites we create, we also provide additional security to shield WordPress users.
As standard we include a plugin called Wordfence that runs a firewall directly from the server. Compared to cloud alternatives it ensures higher levels of protection for your website. For any of our customers that require further protection of sensitive data and information, we have an advanced security package available. This is always available on request.
