Domain Age

Domain Age

There are a variety of factors that go into deciding your ranking on Google. One that is hotly debated is domain age, with some saying it doesn’t matter at all, while others insist it is something taken into account by Google’s algorithm. If you are not aware of what domain age is and why it could be important, read on and we’ll explain everything you need to know below.

What is domain age?

Quite simply, the domain age is how long your domain has existed. For example, if a domain was registered in 2010, in 2020 it would be 20 years old.

It also refers to how long Google have been indexing the domain (how long a site has existed), which could be different to the length of time you have owned it. It’s also why some companies have invested in ‘aged’ domains that have been around for a while to get them a little push on Google.

Why is the domain age important for SEO?

While Google have never explicitly stated the age of the domain is important for SEO, there is quite a bit of evidence that suggests it actually is.

Initially, a site is devalued for the first few months after being discovered by Google, making it particularly hard to enjoy competitive rankings during this period.

Matt Cutts, former head of Google’s web spam team, previously stated that the difference between a 6 and 12 month old domain is very small in terms of how it’s ranked. He said that as long as the domain has been around for at least a few months you stand a good chance of showing up in search results.

What can I do to improve my age domain for SEO?

Unfortunately, there isn’t much you can do except concentrate on the SEO basics to make the site as great as possible, as time is the deciding factor here.

Over time, Google will also improve your rankings based on your organic link profile. This is basically a footprint of all the backlinks created by your site or others. Google is smart enough to realise when your profile is growing organically – if all of a sudden thousands of backlinks suddenly appear it will raise a red flag and you won’t rank well as a result.

The more time that passes, the easier things will become – as long as you are doing all the other SEO basics such as backlinks, social signals, page speed, user experience and mobile usability.
