The importance of backlinks

The importance of backlinks

It’s not only keywords that pay an important role in SEO, but backlinks are just as crucial. But what are backlinks and how do they work? Read on and we’ll cover the basics to help get you started.

What are backlinks?

A backlink is an active link created on an external website that is linked to your website. For example, if you write a blog on another website and add a link to one of your service or product pages, that would be a backlink.

Why are backlinks important?

Backlinks play an important part in SEO because they tell search engines that other websites support your content. The higher the ranking of the website featuring your backlink, the more it will help your SEO.

If a number of sites link to the same website or page a search engine is more likely to increase its importance on the results page. The more of these backlinks that can be earned, the more positive effect it will have on overall search engine rankings.

How can I create more backlinks without much experience?

Historically it used to be the case that the more backlinks you had, the better the results you could achieve. However, that has changed in recent times, with the quality of the backlink now more important than the amount you accrue.

If you are a small business it may seem like a daunting task to build a solid list of backlinks but there is a good shortcut that can save you a lot of time.

This involves using a method called the ‘broken link strategy’:

  • Make a list of sites/blogs from your industry that would like to place your links on
  • Check the sites to see if they have broken (inactive) links still on there
  • Contact the sites to tell them about the broken links so they can be updated
  • Offer to replace the broken links with your content and links

This may seem like quite a lot of work, but by using something like the Check My Links Chrome Extension you can quickly spot broken links on any web page.

To save even more time searching for relevant pages, use the “site:” search on Google like this:

“site:<insert the name of site to search> <your chosen keyword>”

This targeted search will pull up pages, blogs and articles on your chosen topics. Select ones that are more than 6 months old as they are more likely to have broken links that need updating.

As you will also need to contact the owner or admin of the site to tell them about the links, it’s a good idea to write an email template to save you writing from scratch each time.
