Content Length

Content Length

Content length may not be the first thing you think about but a lot of time and energy goes into creating content for your website and for many customers it will be the first time they come into contact with your brand. That means it’s important to understand how the content should be written and how long it should be. It’s a topic we discuss in more detail below.

Why is web page content important?

The Google algorithm is constantly be tweaked and changed with one goal in mind: to produce the most relevant content related to search queries and links to pages that are reliable and of high quality.

In years gone by many website took the shortcut option of stuffing lots of keywords and links into their content to ‘cheat’ the system. Google have since become wise to this and have changed things accordingly.

This means writing high quality content is now the most important thing and this cannot be overstated. Of course, keywords, backlinks and other factors play their part, but if the content is not informative, Google are not likely to reward the site.

So how do Google determine what is good and bad content? All content is effectively subjective, but Google will look at things like structure, grammar, writing style, density of information, word count and more.

Which leads us onto the second important point.

What is the ideal content length?

Again, this can be tricky, as you’ll find ten people telling you one length, and another ten telling you another, and as with almost everything else, Google remain elusive on this matter.

However, there are some basic things you can do to maximise the potential of your content. Try to factor in things such as:

  • Research: In order to write good content, you need to know your stuff. Make sure the content is relevant, isn’t padded out with unnecessary information and covers as much as you can about the topic at hand.
  • Structure: It’s a good idea to break the content down into sections of no more than 300 words. Use a main title and sub-headers as these are also checked by Google and it makes it easier to read.
  • Maximise length: One thing that most people agree on is that long-form content tends to perform better in search results – it also offers more opportunity to add backlinks and in-bound links (links to other pages on your website), which also helps SEO.
  • Content check: Use tools like Grammarly to ensure the content is of a good grammatical standard, spelling is correct and any other issues are spotted. Use it as a second eye to run over your content before it is published for your customers to see.
